Farmajo Returns to Mogadishu Amid Political Deadlock

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The former President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who has spent a long period abroad, touched down at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu this morning.

A government directive has dramatically limited any formal welcome or public reception for Farmajo in the capital, citing concerns over citizen safety and the security of the city.

Although Farmajo has not recently participated in opposition rallies or political forums, it is reported that he is scheduled to hold meetings in Mogadishu in the coming days.

His arrival coincides with a critical period in Somalia’s political calendar: the terms of the country’s top leadership offices and the two houses of Parliament are nearing their expiry, yet no election framework has been agreed upon.

Farmajo served as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia from February 2017 until May 2022.

Reports indicate he returned to Mogadishu from Doha after a long absence, his trip tied to discussions about mediation and the constitution.

His return comes at a time when the federal government and regional states are locked in talks over constitutional amendments and the electoral roadmap.

The mention of fully restricting his reception is not confirmed in major sources; thus it may reflect evolving developments rather than a formally published order.
