Banadir Police Commander Warns Against Irresponsible Weapon Handling by Security Forces

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – The Commander of the Banadir Regional Police, Mahdi Omar Mu’min, widely known as Maallin Mahdi, has issued a stern warning to members of the security forces against the irresponsible practice of handing over weapons to civilians—particularly young people who record themselves with firearms and share the footage on social media platforms.

In a press briefing held earlier this week, Commander Maallin Mahdi emphasized that such actions constitute a serious breach of both discipline and national security protocol. He made it clear that any officer found engaging in such reckless behavior would face legal consequences.

“The Banadir Police Command is sending a clear message to all security personnel: under no circumstances should firearms be handed over to civilians,” said Maallin Mahdi. “Weapons are tools of security and protection—not toys for entertainment or social media stunts. Civilians must also refrain from handling or posing with weapons, as this endangers the safety and peace of the community.”

Commander Mahdi further clarified that any soldier who violates these directives will be subjected to disciplinary and legal proceedings.

He stressed that recording and sharing videos that depict civilians with military-grade weapons is not only irresponsible but also creates public alarm and undermines trust in security institutions.

This statement follows a recent incident at Mogadishu Stadium, where a member of the armed forces was apprehended after handing over his firearm to a civilian youth.

The youth was recorded posing with the weapon in videos that were subsequently posted online. Authorities swiftly arrested both the soldier and the civilian involved.

The event occurred during the Banadir District Football Tournament, which began last Friday and has drawn large crowds.

In response to the security breach, law enforcement agencies in the capital have launched a crackdown on activities considered to threaten public order during the tournament.

Over the past week, several youths suspected of participating in acts deemed harmful to the security of the Mogadishu Stadium have been detained for questioning.

The Banadir Police Commander concluded by urging all security personnel to exercise the highest level of professionalism and discipline in the line of duty.

He reiterated that maintaining the trust of the public is essential and that such irresponsible behavior by a few individuals could tarnish the image of the entire security apparatus.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and stability of the capital. Any action that compromises public security will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law,” said Maallin Mahdi.

The police command has called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement and to report any suspicious activity that could endanger the safety of others.
