Addis Ababa (Kaab TV) – General Bulti Tadesse, the Commander of the Ethiopian Defense College, delivered a bold statement during an address to military trainees, asserting that Ethiopia is resolutely committed to securing direct access to the Red Sea and emerging as a major regional power.
Speaking to the soldiers in training, General Bulti emphasized that Ethiopia’s long-term national interests include reclaiming access to vital maritime routes. He underlined that while the country prioritizes peaceful diplomacy and regional cooperation, it is also preparing for the possibility that force may be necessary should peaceful negotiations fail.
“We are mentally and physically prepared to reach the Red Sea,” said General Bulti. “Diplomacy, peace, and mutual understanding remain our preferred paths. However, if these avenues are blocked and the government orders action, we are ready to carry out that mission. The future lies in that direction.”
General Bulti’s remarks echo sentiments expressed earlier this month by General Teshome Gemechu, the Director General of International Relations and Military Cooperation at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defence. In early September, General Teshome also spoke of Ethiopia’s strategic objective to gain maritime access and its growing ambition to assert itself as a significant regional power.
These statements have raised concerns among neighboring countries, particularly Eritrea. The Eritrean government has accused Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration of harboring intentions to seize the Port of Assab. In addition, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has reportedly warned that Ethiopia may also have territorial aspirations along the Somali coast.
As regional tensions rise, Ethiopia’s public positioning signals a shift toward more assertive geopolitical strategies. The developments are being closely watched by both regional observers and international stakeholders concerned about peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
