Tensions Escalate Between Hirshabelle President and Villa Somalia Amid Power Struggles and Military Mobilization

|

JOWHAR (KAAB TV) – In recent hours, political tensions between the President of Hirshabelle State, Ali Gudlawe Hussein, and the Somali Federal Government—particularly the office of the presidency known as Villa Somalia—have sharply escalated. The friction has become increasingly visible, even affecting critical sites such as Jowhar Airport, the administrative capital and strategic hub of Hirshabelle.

Reliable sources have confirmed that President Gudlawe has privately voiced concerns over the influence of certain federal politicians on his political future. These concerns reportedly stem from the growing presence and activities of key political figures from the Middle Shabelle region—figures who have recently increased their engagement within Hirshabelle’s political landscape.

Villa Somalia, in turn, has not remained silent. According to insider reports, federal officials have expressed alignment with Gudlawe’s political rivals—particularly two influential figures from Middle Shabelle who have undertaken visits across the region, apparently in an effort to consolidate influence and potentially shift the balance of power within the Hirshabelle administration.

During a recent closed-door meeting between President Gudlawe and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the tensions reached a boiling point. Gudlawe reportedly pressed for the political and military autonomy of the Hirshabelle administration, stating that the region’s internal affairs should be free from federal political interference and military directives.

However, President Hassan Sheikh responded by emphasizing the federal government’s current military campaign against Al-Shabaab in the Hirshabelle area. He stressed that the mobilization of local forces, in cooperation with national military units, was solely aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab’s presence—not undermining the authority of Hirshabelle’s leadership.

President Hassan Sheikh further clarified that the military deployment in Middle Shabelle was part of a national effort to empower local defense forces and stabilize the region, and denied any political motives behind the operations. He reassured Gudlawe that the campaign had been coordinated in good faith and aligned with the broader national security agenda.

Despite these assurances, sources close to President Gudlawe reveal that he remains unconvinced and dissatisfied with the federal government’s actions and explanations. He is reportedly troubled by what he perceives as a deliberate attempt to weaken his administration and influence his political trajectory.

Analysts suggest that the current political rift is being exacerbated by the military presence in Middle Shabelle, which some believe is being used as a tool to sideline Gudlawe and empower rival factions within Hirshabelle. The President, feeling increasingly politically isolated, is said to fear that these developments may signal the beginning of the end for his leadership.

As the situation unfolds, observers warn that continued friction between the regional and federal governments could undermine ongoing efforts to combat Al-Shabaab, destabilize governance in Hirshabelle, and further complicate Somalia’s fragile political landscape.
