Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The European Union (EU) has officially launched the Green Energy and Economic Development (GEED) Program in Mogadishu, a major initiative aimed at expanding access to clean energy and fostering sustainable economic growth in Somalia.
Backed by €47.5 million in funding from the European Union, the German Government, and other development partners, the GEED program is designed to increase the availability of renewable energy for Somali households and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The program consists of five key projects focused on developing energy markets, enhancing local expertise through vocational training, reducing investment risks for the private sector, and addressing legal, economic, and environmental barriers to development.
Speaking at the launch, EU Ambassador to Somalia Karin Johansson stated, “Renewable energy and green growth are priorities we share with the Federal Government of Somalia. They are essential for sustainable development, poverty reduction, and peacebuilding.”
The event was attended by Somalia’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdullahi Bidhahan Warsame, along with other cabinet members, director-generals, representatives from partner organizations, and international stakeholders.
