Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – A man was arrested today at an election registration center in Shangaani district after allegedly attempting to register twice for the upcoming elections.
The suspect, identified as Yusuf Ahmed Daghane, a member of the Somali National Army, was flagged during his second attempt by the digital verification system. The system detected that he had already completed registration earlier at the same location.
Police officers assigned to oversee security and the registration process took Daghane into custody. He has since been transferred to a secure facility for further investigation.
According to electoral rules and procedures, registering more than once is strictly prohibited. The biometric and digital systems in place are designed to detect duplicate registrations. Violators may face legal consequences, including potential imprisonment.
Observers have interpreted this incident as a sign of the growing public engagement in Somalia’s “People and Voice” election — the first such democratic process in over 50 years.
So far, voter registration has taken place in approximately five districts, with some still ongoing. The Electoral Commission reports that the number of registered voters has already exceeded expectations.
The registration phase is scheduled to continue until June 30, after which the voting process will commence, in accordance with the Election Commission’s action plan.
