Cairo (KAAB TV) – The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, arrived in Cairo, Egypt last night to participate in an emergency meeting of the Arab League’s leaders, addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The summit, scheduled for March 4, aims to forge a unified Arab response to the threats posed by US President Donald Trump’s proposal to establish an administration in Gaza and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s efforts to end ceasefire negotiations while escalating military operations.
Hosted by Egypt, the meeting will focus on finding additional measures to safeguard Palestinian rights and improve living conditions in Gaza.
On February 21, representatives from Egypt, Jordan, and the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries met in Riyadh to set the agenda for the Cairo conference. The Riyadh discussions concentrated on diplomatic strategies aimed at preventing further humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
The Somali government reiterated its commitment to the Palestinian cause during the 9841st meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Government spokesman Farhan Mohamed Jimale confirmed that Prime Minister Barre would hold separate meetings with his counterparts and other Arab League heads of state, focusing on rebuilding the Somali National Army and seeking additional support for Somalia’s development initiatives.
In a related development, Israel blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid into Gaza on the second day of Ramadan, citing alleged violations by Hamas of a last-minute US proposal to extend the Gaza ceasefire during Ramadan and Passover. This move has effectively stalled negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire, which was expected to commence on March 1 and would have included a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
