UN Security Council to Vote on Increased Sanctions Against Al-Shabaab in Somalia

|

New York (KAAB TV) – The United Nations Security Council is set to vote this afternoon on a draft resolution to impose additional sanctions on the Al-Shabaab group in Somalia.

A statement released by the Security Council confirmed that members are also deliberating today on renewing the mandate for the committee of experts responsible for monitoring the enforcement of these sanctions on Al-Shabaab.

The draft resolution, prepared by the British government, includes the extension of the maritime ban on the import of illegal weapons, as well as restrictions on the export of coal and various types of explosives.

The committee of experts recently submitted an updated report, which reaffirmed that Al-Shabaab continues to be the largest threat to peace and security in Somalia. The group remains capable of launching significant attacks against the Somali government, African Union forces, and international peacekeeping forces.

The report also highlighted a notable shift in the influence of the Daesh group in Somalia, alongside an increase in piracy incidents. Since November 2023, more than 25 piracy attacks, including ship hijackings and commercial boat seizures, have been reported.

Denmark, which is holding the regular monthly Security Council meeting in March, will also provide updates on the ongoing situations in Russia, Ukraine, Palestine, Syria, and Sudan.
